Types of root systems and structures

A plant’s root system begins at the time of germination. There are several different types of roots that help a plant survive. For example, some plants like Angelica have a thick, straight taproot that sprouts directly from the seed. Growing from the sides of this main taproot are smaller, thinner whiskers called lateral roots.

Other plants, such as the Narcissus or green foxtail, have roots that do not grow from the seed but sprout from other places on the plant. These are known as adventitious roots and often appear short and dense, similar to a beard.

Whether a plant uses a taproot system or an adventitious system, these structures are essential for gathering the resources the plant needs from its environment.

The functions of plant roots
