What is light refraction?

Refraction is a phenomenon that happens when light travels from one medium to another, such as from air into water or glass. When this move occurs, the light changes direction and bends.

However, if light enters another medium perfectly straight, refraction does not occur. This bending of light is the reason why objects underwater can appear to be in a different position than they actually are.

The direction of the bend depends on which materials the light is passing through. When light passes from air into water or glass, it bends away from the surface.

Conversely, when light moves from water or glass back into the air, it bends toward the surface. This constant bending helps create interesting visual effects in nature, such as mirages, where distant objects appear to be floating in the sky.

How does light split into different colors?

Refraction also explains how we see rainbows and other colorful displays through a process called dispersion. Sunlight is polychromatic, meaning it is made of many different colors.

When this light passes through a medium like water droplets or a prism, it is split into individual monochromatic colors: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet.

Different colors of light bend at different angles during this process.

For example, violet light bends the most, while red light bends the least. This specific order is why red is always found at the top of a rainbow and violet is at the bottom. We see the beauty of dispersion in many places:

  • Rainbows: Sunlight splits into colors as it passes through rain droplets in the air.
