What You Will Learn From This Lesson
- Hydrothermal vents form tall chimneys from heated minerals.
- Specialized bacteria provide food for animals living near vents.
- Heat-resistant animals thrive in deep-sea vent ecosystems.
What are the hydrothermal vents?
Hydrothermal vents are incredible underwater formations found deep in the midnight zone where seawater meets the heat of the Earth’s core. These vents begin as cracks on the sea floor that allow water to trickle down and become extremely hot. The heated water is then sent back through the cracks along with a variety of minerals.
As these minerals stack up, they form tall structures called chimneys that can reach over 300 feet in height. The water carrying these minerals looks like puffs of smoke as it exits the chimney.
Which sea animals live in the hydrothermal vents?
The area surrounding hydrothermal vents is often called a deep-sea oasis because it is filled with many kinds of marine animals. These creatures are heat-resistant and can live in the very warm waters near the chimneys.
Squat lobsters are common residents that have bacteria living in their hair to digest minerals and make food. Deep-sea mussels also live here and use similar bacteria inside their bodies to survive. These animals rely on the rich minerals provided by the hydrothermal vents to thrive in the dark ocean.
Fun Fact
- Squat lobsters grow their own “garden” of tiny bacteria right inside their thick body hair to eat.
- Squat lobsters are completely white from head to tail because they live in total darkness where colors don’t matter.
Vocabulary
- Hydrothermal Vent: A hot spring on the ocean floor where seawater is heated by magma and escapes from the Earth’s crust as a mineral-rich fluid.
- Chimney: A tall, hollow pillar formed when minerals in the hot vent water meet cold seawater and harden into a stacked structure.
