What You Will Learn from This Lesson
- Uranus was discovered by Herschel using a telescope.
- Uranus rotates while lying on its side.
- Uranus has the coldest atmosphere in the Solar System.
Herschel Discovered Uranus
The planet Uranus was discovered over two hundred years ago by an astronomer using a telescope. Before this discovery, people thought the Solar System contained only six planets. The discovery of Uranus helped people better understand the actual boundaries of our solar system.
Uranus Rotates Sideways
Uranus is often called the “lazy” planet because, unlike most other planets, it rotates while lying on its side. The rotational axis of Uranus is tipped over, making it appear to roll. Scientists theorize that when Uranus was younger, it rotated upright, like the other planets. However, a celestial body about the size of Earth may have crashed into it, knocking Uranus onto its side.

Uranus is the Coldest Planet
Uranus is the planet with the coldest atmosphere in the Solar System. It radiates very little heat from its core. Additionally, Uranus is very far from the Sun, so it only receives a small amount of light and heat. These factors cause the surface atmosphere temperature to be extremely low, reaching a minimum of minus 224 degrees Celsius (minus 371 degrees Fahrenheit).

Fun Fact
- Uranus appears blue-green because its atmosphere absorbs most red light due to the presence of methane.
- It takes Uranus a total of 84 Earth years to complete one orbit around the Sun.
- If a piece of red-hot iron were near Uranus, the extreme cold would freeze it solid.
Vocabulary
- Uranus: The seventh planet from the Sun. It is known for its sideways rotation and being the coldest planet in the Solar System.
- Solar System: The system that includes the Sun, eight planets like Uranus, and other celestial bodies.
- Planet: A large, round celestial body that orbits the Sun, such as Uranus.
